The Basics
When 3sCo works on smaller projects we sign a contract for a fixed number of hours. For larger projects we prefer to develop a budget estimate and then charge hourly in periodic invoices. During hourly projects the budget will be reviewed at intervals by our project lead and the client to be certain that goals and deliverables are being achieved within a reasonable timeframe and according to budget. According to us, A smaller project is anything that costs less then a compact car (6k or less). At 3sCo we strive to do our work efficiently and work with our clients to help them maximize their budgets. That being said, there are a few things our clients can do to help ensure that they are pleased with both the end result and the amount of their investment.
What can clients do to keep media design and consultation expenses low?
- Be clear: Have a good idea of the projects scope, goal and budget before you start hiring. If you would like to arrange a consultation with 3sCo in order to work on a site strategy prior to implementation we are happy to provide consultation services billed according to the rates outlined above.
- Be organized: Give us a clear understanding of who is in charge of what, and who will be able to answer to our questions.
- Be careful: Provide all information, data, content and images as final copies. Proofread carefully.
- Be prompt: Give requested feedback in a timely manner.
The following list should answer your other questions. If you would like further information please get in touch.
What is your hourly rate?
Our hourly rate is competitive information, so we can’t tell you. We can say that our rates vary (though not to wildly) depending on our clients. Our rates depend on the client’s level of preparedness, the financial profile of the organizations they represent, and our capacity to take on work at the time.
Do you charge for an initial consultation?
Our first meeting is free. We can help you decide if we are the right company for you, and also if you are ready to start a project with us, all at no charge.
Do you do pro-bono work?
We do not. We each have a list longer then the refrigerator door of people, groups and musicians we’d love to make websites for, if we just had the time. However it is not a possibility for us as we try to grow our company. If you represent a group for whom you think the need for a reduced hourly rate is justified, and if you can issue us a receipt for donated hours, then please send a letter of intent and we can discuss in-kind possibilities.
What is the minimum you charge for a website?
A website never costs less then $2000. After years of tooth-grinding and rent-bouncing frustration this is something we have learned to say up front. Of course, it costs less if you get a less-then-professional person to make the site. That being said, we do not think it is worth it to make a site on the cheap: A cheap bicycle or a cheap pair of shoes will not last as long, nor provide the same level of quality. Why expect a web site to be amazing if the proper amount of time and care has not gone into its construction.
What is the minimum you charge for a graphic design project?
Our base rate for graphic design projects varies according to scope. Please email us with a description of your project or assignment.
Can we just host our website with you?
3sCoDesign hosting is a service we provide solely for our clients. We are not a web hosting company and do not have the infrastructure to provide that kind of support.
Do you charge for work and meetings without a contract?
If you would prefer to engage us as consultants outside of a contracted project, we will happily oblige, providing you with our time in meetings, negotiations, brainstorming sessions, workshops, and coffee klatches at an hourly rate. We will not commence a project or provide you with any 3sCo product without signing a contract that expressly describes the work we are undertaking and the negotiated rate.
Do you accept credit cards?
At this point we do not accept credit cards. We’d like a pony though.
What do you charge for rush work?
For our basic hourly rate + 50%, we will help you make that awful deadline with sophistication, precision and good cheer.
Are you the cheapest media designers/consultants in Montreal?
Nope, and we are not trying to be the cheapest. We are trying to be affordable, high- quality and responsible participatory media designers for socially progressive businesses and organizations. Want to learn more? Read our promise.
